Men's Golf Set to Open Spring Slate in Laredo

The Mean Green will open up their spring schedule by south to the Texas-Mexico border to compete in the Border Olympics, which is hosted by Houston.
THE EVENT: Laredo Country Club will play at 7,375 yards, and will be a par-72 course for the tournament. The two-day event begins Monday and runs through Tuesday with shotgun starts on both days. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and conclude with the final 18 holes on Tuesday.

THE FIELD:Â There are 17 teams participating in the tournament: Abilene Christian, Bowling Green, Houston, Houston Christian, Illinois State, Lamar, Lipscomb, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, New Mexico State, Rice, Sam Houston, Troy, ULM, UNT, Western Carolina and Wright State.

REPRESENTING UNT:Â Competing for the Mean Green will be Cody Winkler, Tucker Allen, Diego Prone, Alvaro Roldos and Key Coker.

CALCATERA SAYS:Â "We are really excited to get the week started in Laredo," head coach Luke Calcatera said. "I have seen the guys put forth a lot of work in the offseason leading up to our first event. Qualifying has been very competitive and the team has done a great job of putting in the work each day leading up to the Border Olympics. We're looking forward to a strong start from our traveling seniors Cody, Tucker, and Diego."
INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR: The Mean Green feature seven international players this year. Rafael Estrada (Mexico), Nikhil Gopal (South Africa), Harry Lord (England), Diego Prone (Argentina), Simon Roessler (Chile), Alvaro Roldos (Spain) and Philippe Thorin (Ecuador) round out the international players. Meanwhile, four players (Tucker Allen, Preston Holmes, Key Coker and Cody Winkler) are native Texans.

UP NEXT:Â UNT will have a quick turnaround as it gets back to competition Feb. 26-28, at the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate in Las Vegas.
HOME SWEET HOME: The Mean Green golf programs are thrilled to have the Bruzzy's UNT Golf Practice Facility, which is a $3 million on-campus facility that features state-of-the-art technology, such as TrackMan, swing catalysts, indoor hitting bays, a short-game area and a PuttView indoor putting green.
