DAVIS, Calif. - The UNT men's golf team rocketed up the leaderboard for a second straight day in Sunday's final round at the El Macero Classic with its second consecutive 7-under 281, which was the best round of the day on Saturday and the second-best round on Sunday, to finish in second place after ending Round 1 on Friday in 12th place.
The Mean Green finished three shots back of No. 45 San Diego after moving up five spots on Saturday and five more on Sunday, when junior Vicente Marzilio led the way with a 6-under 66 to end in sixth place at 7-under par. Junior Tucker Allen was 1-under on Sunday to finish in a tie for 10th at 4-under par. Diego Prone joined Marzilio and Allen under par on Sunday with a 2-under 70 following Saturday's 69 to rebound from an opening-round 79 and finish tied for 36th.
The team total of 281 marked a new season low for the Mean Green, and Marzilio's final-round 66 was a new season-low round for an individual.
"The team continues to improve every tournament this spring," UNT coach Brad Stracke said. "We played great the last two rounds with slow starts. The team showed a lot of mental toughness, and I am very proud them."
UNT will now prepare for the Conference USA Championship, which will be in Texarkana beginning April 24 before the two days of match play begins on April 27.
