RUSTON, La. – Cierra Simon tallied the game-winning RBI on a seventh-inning triple as UNT softball defeated Charlotte 4-3 in the Conference USA Championship semifinal on Friday at Dr. Billy Bundrick Field.
"This team has been resilient all year," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "We feel like we're a good offensive team, but we've just struggled. I feel like we had a good plan and that's a sign of what our kids can do. They let yesterday go and were good offensively today."
The Mean Green (35-21, 16-8) struck for eight hits and surpassed its total of seven hits in the first two games of the tournament. North Texas dropped the 49ers (33-20, 16-7) to advance to its second consecutive C-USA Championship final.
Mackenzie Childers (W, 2-2) entered the circle in relief with a career-high mark of seven strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings. She allowed one run on one hit and three walks.
Lexi Cobb scored the game-winning run after Simon's seventh-inning triple and was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Over the tournament, Cobb leads the team with a .444 batting average with four runs scored.
Kalei Christensen opened the scoring with a solo home run to begin the comeback from an early two-run deficit. She added an RBI single in the fifth inning.
Starting pitcher Skylar Savage spun 2 1/3 innings with two earned runs on one hit and four walks. She recorded two strikeouts.
Ashley Peters (S, 3) struck out the side in the seventh and closed the game with the bases loaded.
