NORMAN, Okla. - UNT junior Vicente Marzilio will begin competing in the NCAA Regional on Monday as an individual for the third straight year, just a few hours up Interstate 35 at the Norman Regional at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.
Marzilio posted seven top-25 finishes in 11 starts this year and had three top-six showings while also being named Conference USA Golfer of the Week twice this year. The top individual finisher at regionals not on an advancing team will advance to the NCAA Championship May 26-31, in Scottsdale, Arizona.
"Vicente has had a great year and earned this opportunity to compete in the NCAAs," UNT head coach Brad Stracke said. "I'm looking forward to traveling and competing in Norman."
Marzilio was No. 229 in the latest Golfstat poll and has led the team all year, posting a 72.09 scoring average on the year with a season-low round of 66 at the El Macero Classic, where he finished sixth last month.
Last year at the Norman Regional, Marzilio finished in a tie for 34th, and two years ago as a freshman at the Stillwater Regional, he tied for 21st.
"I'm really excited to have another chance at regionals," Marzilio said. "Especially coming back to a place where I played last year. I had two chances to play at regionals already, and I really want to take advantage of this one. I want to go for the big championship, and to have the chance one more time feels awesome."
