DENTON — The UNT men's basketball team opened its three games over five days stretch with a 83-42 win over Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday night.
The Mean Green (7-3) tallied their highest point total of the season in the win. Brenen Lorient led all scorers with 16, going 6-of-7 from the field. Johnathan Massie scored 12 points, surpassing 1,000 points in his college career.
"It was nice to be back in [the Super Pit]," head coach Ross Hodge said. "Thought we did a good job attacking the zone in the first half and really throughout the game I thought we made simple plays, put the ball into good areas [and] played the right way."
North Texas posted its highest shot percentage in five seasons, going to 63.8 percent from the field against MVSU (2-9), the highest tally since Nov. 26, 2020, when the Mean Green shot 65.1 percent in a win over the Delta Devils. It was the first time since Feb. 16, 2023 against Louisiana Tech that UNT shot over 60 percent from the field in a game.
On Wednesday North Texas commanded early, taking an 18-point lead into halftime. The Mean Green opened the second half with a 10-0 run and cruised to the victory.
UNT faces App State on Friday at the Super Pit in its penultimate non-conference contest. Friday's game is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on the Mean Green Sports Network and ESPN+
