DENTON — Just one day removed from a 41-point home win over Mississippi Valley State, the UNT men's basketball team hosts reigning Sun Belt regular season champion App State Friday night at the Super Pit
The Mean Green (7-3) and Mountaineers (6-5) are scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield and on ESPN+.
North Texas defeated the Delta Devils on Wednesday 83-42 behind its most efficient offensive performance of the season. UNT shot a season-high 64 percent from the floor as they scored a season-high 83 points.
Friday the Mean Green welcome an App State team that won 27 games a season ago and went 16-2 in league in route to the title. They featured one of the nation's top defenses as they held teams to 67.1 points per game.
App State's roster this season looks a tad different from last year as the Mountaineers have replaced all five starters from last season and their top three scorers.
Mean Green fans might recognize one of App State's newcomers as former Charlotte guard Jackson Threadgill is now playing for the Mountaineers. Threadgill made 73 career starts for the 49ers and made 91 3-pointers in his four seasons in Charlotte. Dec. 20 will be his third trip to the Super Pit. He's averaging 6 points per game at the Super Pit.
UNT newcomer Latrell Jossell and App State newcomer Jalil Beaubrun were teammates at Stephen F. Austin for three seasons.
Appalachian State is led by head coach Dustin Kerns who is in his sixth season at the helm of the Mountaineers program. App State had nine straight losing seasons prior to Kerns arrival and in just his second season he led them to the 2021 NCAA Tournament. The Mountaineers have finished .500 or better every season under Kerns.
Friday will be the second all-time meeting between North Texas and App State. Their only other game against each other came exactly 35 years ago to the day. The Mean Green defeated the Mountaineers 95-83 in Honolulu on Dec. 20, 1990.
