Softball Drops Saturday Showdown to RV FAU

DENTON, Texas – Despite a pair of two-run home runs from Mikayla Smith and Rylee Nicholson, UNT softball fell 6-4 against RV Florida Atlantic at Lovelace Stadium on Saturday.
"We had chances to score runs and we didn't," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "We had a chance in the sixth [inning] with runners on and good hitters up but didn't get anything there."
In the sixth inning, the Mean Green (22-18, 11-6) loaded the bases with two outs after back-to-back singles and a walk. Holding a 6-2 lead, the Owls (33-10, 13-4) shut the door on the frame with a lineout to right field.
Skylar Savage (L, 5-8) threw 105 pitches over six innings of work with five strikeouts. She allowed five earned runs on 11 hits and three walks.
Mikayla Smith posted her fourth multi-run home run of the season and eighth overall with a two-run shot in the fourth inning to break the scoreless 4-0 deficit for North Texas. She has five hits in her last nine at-bats.
Kailey Gamble collected career walk No. 104 in the sixth inning and moved into a tie for the program record with alumna Lisa Johnson (2009-12). She currently sits top five in eight different career statistical categories for UNT.
Redshirt freshman Kayleigh Smith entered the game in the top of the seventh inning with one inherited runner and retired the side safely. She recorded a line out and two strikeouts to end the frame.
Down 6-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Nicholson provided a two-run home run for her second long ball of the season.
Senior Morgan Medford tallied her third two-hit game in the past week and extended her season-best hitting streak to four games.
