DENTON, Texas – UNT softball fell 2-1 against No. 7 Oklahoma State on Wednesday at Lovelace Stadium.
"I'm happy we competed," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "But it's also disappointing because we had opportunities there."
Despite a first inning home run, the Mean Green (21-14) dropped to 17-3 when scoring the first run of the game this season. Over its past five meetings, North Texas have held the Cowgirls (30-6) to four runs or less in each contest and lost by no more than two runs over this period.
Mikayla Smith hit her seventh home run of the season on a line drive down the left field line in the first inning. She is three home runs shy of breaking into the career top-10 leaderboard for UNT.
Starting pitcher Skylar Savage (L, 5-6) battled for 5 2/3 innings and allowed two earned runs on seven hits and one walk. Mackenzie Childers spun 1 1/3 frames of relief work with two strikeouts and gave up only one hit.
After OSU took the lead in the top of the sixth inning, the Mean Green collected back-to-back singles from Kailey Gamble and Kat Ibarra. Both runners advanced into scoring position with one out, but Lexi Kilfoyl (SV, 2) collected two strikeouts to end the threat.
