Softball Drops Extra Inning Loss

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After capturing a one-run lead in the top of the eighth inning, UNT softball lost 4-3 at UAB on Saturday.
North Texas (21-16, 10-4) dropped its first extra-inning loss of the season after UAB (16-21, 7-7) scored on an error to tie the game and walked off on a sacrifice fly.
Starting pitcher Skylar Savage (L, 5-7) set a new career high with 7 2/3 innings pitched and added two strikeouts. She allowed zero earned runs on seven hits and four walks.
Lexi Cobb led off the third inning with her 31st career double before Cierra Simon seemingly advanced her to third on a bunt single with one out. The play was reviewed and overturned as Simon was ruled out of the box on the play.
The Mean Green opened the scoring in the fifth inning with an RBI single from Simon before the Blazers answered with two runs in the home half of the frame.
Senior Molly Rainey tied the game at 2-2 with a solo home run in the sixth inning, her fourth of the season and 20th of her UNT career.
UAB called freshman Olivia Cummings (W, 3-1) from the bullpen and she gave up a single to Rylee Nicholson in the eighth inning. UNT then drew three consecutive walks with Cobb collecting the RBI on a bases-loaded walk for a 3-2 lead.
Cobb reached base in each of her four plate appearances on Saturday and leads North Texas with a .545 batting average (6-for-11) with three doubles over the last five games.
