Shulzhenko and Nformi log singles victories for the Mean Green
NEW ORLEANS – In a matchup between a pair of teams jockeying for positioning in the American Athletic Conference, the UNT tennis team was unable to grab a road win as they fell 4-2 against Tulane Sunday at City Park Tennis Center.
The Mean Green picked up a singles victory from Stanislava Shulzhenko and sent three other singles matches to a decisive third set but ultimately dropped the match to fall to 10-11 this season while the Green Wave improved to 11-7.
Tulane was able to start the day by taking the doubles point with a pair of strong wins at lines one and two. The Green Wave won 6-1 at line one and 6-2 at line two to drop the Mean Green to 13-8 in doubles points this season.
After falling in straight sets at lines one and six, Shulzhenko got UNT on the board with a strong 7-5, 6-3 victory at line three. Shulzhenko registered her ninth singles victory and has now won four of her last five contests on the year.
The match was closer than the final score indicated as the matches at lines two, four and five all went to a third set.
At line two, Stadfany Nformi pushed the deficit to one after coming from down one set to none to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 at line two. Nformi now has a team-high 10 wins in singles play this season with eight of those coming at line two.
At line four, Lou Chalard was in a true back-and-forth battle with the score 6-3, 6-7 (7-3). The match was decided before her third set kicked off.
Ultimately, Tulane took home the win with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 come-from-behind victory at line five to clinch the match 4-2.
North Texas will return to action with a pair of AAC matchups to close out the regular season this weekend in Tulsa, Okla., facing off with Tulsa Friday and Temple Saturday.
