UNT’s 14-game win streak at The Super Pit was snapped in the defeat
DENTON, Texas – The UNT women's basketball team saw its home winning streak snapped in a 60-51 loss to Abilene Christian Wednesday that moved the Mean Green to 3-1 on the season.
Entering Wednesday's matchup, North Texas had rattled off 14 consecutive wins in The Super Pit, dating back to Dec. 21 of last season. The loss to ACU snapped that streak, one win shy of tying the program record that started during the 2001 season and continued into the start of the 2002 campaign.
The Wildcats capitalized on an uncharacteristic performance from the UNT offense, which was the nation's fifth-best scoring offense coming into the game. The Mean Green shot 34% from the field and only knocked down 1-of-20 3-point attempts after converting 48.2% of their 3-point attempts through the first three games.
Even with the offensive struggles, North Texas was able to stay in the game with its defense that held ACU to 37% on the day and forced 25 turnovers.
Despite holding the lead for the majority of the third quarter, UNT could not put the Wildcats away. ACU was able to make a run in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 42 with eight minutes to play before both teams went ice cold from the field and suffered scoring droughts of over five minutes each. Abilene Christian was able to break the drought first and went on to outscore the Mean Green 18-7 to close the game, largely from the free throw line.
With point guard Jazzy Owens-Barnett unavailable, Mekhia Chase made the most of her first start at North Texas, posting 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds in her first double double at the Division I level. Chase recorded the first game since 2021 in which a UNT guard grabbed double-digit rebounds.
Aysia Proctor had 13 points off the bench to lead the Mean Green, while ACU had four players score in double figures, including a team-high 16 from Payton Hull.
North Texas will return to action at SMU on Saturday in its first road game of the season. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CT from Moody Coliseum.
