ARLINGTON, Texas – Mean Green softball extended its winning streak to seven games after a 10-3 victory over Yale and beating UT Arlington 6-4 to wrap up the Boerner Invitational on Sunday at Allan Saxe Field.
"I thought we swung the bat really well," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "We pitched really well, for the most part, and we did a lot of good things this weekend. We had double-digit hits in every game, so we really did what we needed to do."
The seven-game winning streak ties for the fifth longest in program history and is the first spell over seven games since May 13, 2021. For the weekend, North Texas (10-2) tallied a total 38 runs on 46 hits while allowing only nine runs on 13 hits.
The Mean Green posted its third-consecutive game with over 10 runs in the win over Yale (1-4) and marked only the second instance in program history to do so. UNT first accomplished the feat on Feb. 20-22, 2014, with wins over Abilene Christian (12-8), Prairie View A&M (18-0) and Stephen F. Austin (13-4).
Starting pitcher Mackenzie Childers (W, 1-0) held the Bulldogs to one hit over four-plus innings of work with five strikeouts and allowed zero earned runs. Caydance Gaddis made her first collegiate appearance in the circle as she recorded two outs in the fifth before Kayleigh Smith tallied the final seven outs of the game.
Freshman Ausha Moore mashed her first career home run in the fourth inning and scored three runs in the contest. After gaining a 10-run lead in the fourth, DeLong made substitutions to give freshmen Katy Brock and Rylie Harris their collegiate debuts at designated player and first base, respectively.
In game two, North Texas utilized a three-run fifth inning to defeat UTA (7-8) after Cierra Simon hit an opposite field home run and Madison Conley drove a two-run double to the wall in the frame. For the weekend, Simon finished 7-for-12 with five RBI, four runs scored, two home runs and one stolen base.
Another star of the weekend was Tatum Sparks who collected a hit in all four games of the tournament to tie the third-longest reached base streak in program history. She joined Tayla Evans (2019-22) and current UNT assistant coach Katie Clark (2018-20) at 21 games entering Wednesday's home opener.
Senior Skylar Savage (W, 6-0) continued her stellar season as she spun seven innings with five strikeouts. Savage continues to climb up the UNT career leaderboard after she registered her 23rd complete game in start No. 57 over four seasons in Denton.
