GREENVILLE, N.C. – Mean Green softball lost both games of a Saturday doubleheader against East Carolina at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium. Game one ended 6-0 while game two finished 8-7 to cap the regular season.
UNT (34-20, 16-11) dropped to fourth place in the American Athletic Conference standings after the Pirates (29-25, 14-13) swept the three-game series. With the No. 4 seed at The American Championship secured, the Mean Green will play at 11 a.m. CT on Thursday at USF Softball Stadium with the opponent yet to be determined.
In game one, catcher Elizabeth Moffitt became the second player in program history with four walks in a single game as she tied the program record set by Ana Vega on Feb. 6, 2004. Despite reaching base in all four plate appearances, Moffitt was unable to score as the Mean Green stranded 10 runners on base in the shutout loss.
In game two, North Texas jumped out to a four-run lead in the first inning after ECU registered two errors in the inning. The Pirates would answer with a five-run outburst in the third and added three runs in the fourth for an 8-5 lead.
Madison Conley recorded a leadoff home run in the fifth inning before Riley McNemar collected an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the sixth to drop the Pirates lead to 8-7. Down one run entering the seventh inning, The Mean Green were able to load the bases but could not score to extend the game.
Game one starting pitcher Anneca Anderson (L, 13-6) posted three strikeouts over three-plus innings of work while game two starter Gracie Maloney (L, 0-2) was pulled after 2 1/3 innings.
Junior Tatum Sparks tallied two hits in each game for a total of 21 multi-hit games this season. She became the first player since 2017 to eclipse 20 multi-hit games in a single season after Kelli Schkade (2015-17) posted 22 as a senior.
Senior Cierra Simon captured the career program record for runs scored with her 132nd on a sacrifice fly in the first inning of game two. Additionally, Simon matched the single-season UNT record of 22 stolen bases in game two as she tied teammate Rylee Nicholson and Schkade.
