Men’s Golf Places Second at Border Olympics

LAREDO, Texas – The UNT's men's golf team fired a 3-under 281 Tuesday at the Border Olympics to finish tied for second place. It completed the week at even-par and just two strokes behind champion Houston.
North Texas has now finished second in back-to-back tournaments to open the spring season after not placing higher than fourth during the fall. It led the field in birdies this week (53) and briefly sat atop the leaderboard following a late third-round push that included a 7-under team score throughout the back nine.
Noah Blaickner and Rayhan Latief were crucial to UNT's strong third round as they both carded rounds of 69 to tie for 15th and 18th, respectively. After beginning the day on hole No. 3, Blaickner sank five birdies in his final eight holes to rocket back up the leaderboard and secure his second top-15 result in a row. Meanwhile, Latief's 69 marked the best 18-hole score of his freshman campaign.
Joining Blaickner in 15th was Blake Keen, who signed off on an even-par round Tuesday. He now owns three consecutive top-20 performances dating back to the Everett Buick GMC Classic in October. Alex Huang was not far behind, landing in T22 at 4-over for the week.
For the fourth time in six career starts, Mitchell Maier placed top 20 following a 6-over 77 on Tuesday. He concluded the tournament at 1-over, best on the team.
Playing as an individual, Kalle Svederman finished tied for 46th with a 54-hole score of 222.
North Texas returns to action on Mar. 9-10 when it travels to Lafayette, La., for the Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club.
