Men’s Golf Places Second to Begin Spring Season

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico – The UNT men's golf team posted its best tournament finish of the season Tuesday at the Compadres Collegiate, compiling a 4-over final round to place second. North Texas completed the week at 21-over, just five shots behind champion UTRGV.
Tuesday's 292 was UNT's lowest round of the week as it steadily improved across all three days of action. The Mean Green were one of three teams to sink at least 50 birdies throughout the tournament and led the field in par-5 scoring at 9-under.
Sophomore Alex Huang capped off an incredible week tied for third after shooting a 75 on Tuesday. He now boasts top-10 finishes in four of his 12 career events and has done so in back-to-back tournaments dating back to October. Aggressive yet calculated, Huang carded the field's most birdies (15) and least amount of bogeys (6).
Noah Blaickner and Mitchell Maier both finished the spring opener tied for 12th at 7-over. Blaickner provided a consistent presence all week long, never shooting higher than 75, as he secured his best placement as a member of the UNT program. Meanwhile, Maier saw his score improve each day and has finished top 25 in four of the first five tournaments of his freshman campaign.
Rayhan Latief soared up the leaderboard Tuesday thanks to a 1-under 71, eventually landing in solo 18th. Following T69 and T46 placements in his two fall appearances, the freshman carries plenty of momentum into the rest of the spring schedule. Latief concluded play just one stroke ahead of Blake Keen, who finished at 11-over.
Playing as an individual, Joe Stover also completed the week on a high note as he signed off on 1-over 73. That performance sent him eight spots up the leaderboard to 34th-place.
North Texas returns to action on Feb. 16-17 as it heads to Laredo, Texas, for the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club.
