LAKE CHARLES, La. – Mean Green softball dropped its opening two games of the season with a 10-2 loss in five innings to No. 2 Texas Tech before it fell 5-2 against McNeese at Cowgirl Diamond on Friday.
"Going into the weekend, we knew that we were going to be tested out of the gate," head coach Cody White said. "We made mistakes early in both games that cost us, but this is a talented group and I'm eager to see how we respond tomorrow."
UNT (0-2) allowed two first inning runs against the Red Raiders (2-0) and four in the opening frame versus the Cowgirls (1-1) and gave up a total of four home runs over two games.
In game one, freshman shortstop Eva Daniels plated the lone runs for the Mean Green as she collected a two-run home run in the fifth inning for the first hit of her career. She is the first UNT freshman to record a home run as her first career hit since Elizabeth Moffitt did so as a redshirt freshman versus Utah Tech on Feb. 9, 2024.
Newcomer Bradi Harman broke up the perfect game in the top of the fourth inning while Ariah Mitchell set the table for Daniels' two-run shot with a single to lead off the fifth. Mitchell was lifted for pinch runner Sienna Mayer who would score her first career run on the home run from Daniels.
Starting pitcher Britney Lewinski (L, 0-1) threw three-plus innings and took the decision against Texas Tech while junior Kayleigh Smith spun 1 2/3 innings in relief.
In game two, junior Elizabeth Moffitt provided a two-run home run in the sixth inning as sophomore Taylor Platt scored her first run of the season.
In her first Division I start in the circle, Harman (L, 0-1) recorded one out and gave up three earned runs before Anneca Anderson took the ball and tossed 5 2/3 relief innings with two strikeouts.
The Mean Green travel to the 40th Annual Louisiana Classic in Lafayette, La., for games against Jax State at 1 p.m. and Louisiana at 3:30 p.m. from Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park.
