LUBBOCK, Texas – UNT softball closed the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic with a 7-2 to No. 2 Texas Tech on Sunday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field.
Despite the loss, the Mean Green (10-12) stood toe-to-toe with the Red Raiders (22-1) as it collected seven hits including multiple from Elizabeth Moffitt and Kaycee Slovak, who finished with two apiece. UNT stranded eight runners, including three in scoring position, on Sunday.
Head coach Cody White detailed the positives he saw from a three-win road weekend.
"Our bats started to go, and we hit the ball a lot better," White said. "Our pitching is starting to get a lot more comfortable but we're tired because we've been on the road a lot. I'm really proud of the team for coming out and fighting through that exhaustion."
Britney Lewinski (L, 5-5) recorded her fifth complete game of the season with six innings pitched and one strikeout. Entering the season, Lewinski had five career complete games and has since doubled that number over 14 appearances with the Mean Green.
After Tech opened with a four-run first inning, North Texas countered in the third with an RBI single from Moffitt after Madison Conley set the table with a two-out double down the left field line. Both Moffitt and Conley finished the weekend with batting averages of .545 and .500, respectively.
In the fifth, Ariah Mitchell hit a leadoff double and later scored from second as Moffitt drove a single to center field that was bobbled and allowed Mitchell to cross the plate safely.
North Texas held the hosts to a five-run lead entering the seventh to snap a six-game streak of run-rule victories for the Red Raiders.
Next up, the Mean Green will host No. 6 Oklahoma on Tuesday at 6 p.m. on ESPN+ from Lovelace Stadium.
