The Mean Green open conference play 5-0 for the second time in program history
DENTON – UNT softball won 6-1 over Tulsa on Saturday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium and clinched its second American Conference series victory of the season.
The Mean Green (15-13, 5-0) opened conference play with a 5-0 record for only the second time in program history, last accomplishing the feat in 2024. The series clinching victory marks the fourth-consecutive win over the Golden Hurricane (8-17, 0-5) and fourth league series win in four tries against Tulsa.
Starting pitcher Britney Lewinski (W, 9-6) notched her 12th career complete game and seventh of the season as she gave up one run on eight hits and one walk over seven innings pitched, adding two strikeouts.
North Texas trailed 1-0 in the third inning before Madison Conley leveled the score with an RBI single in the home half of the frame. Lewinski and the Mean Green defense held the Golden Hurricane at bay despite multiple base runners reaching in the fourth and fifth before a shutdown inning in the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth, freshman Laila Nobles led off with a tie-breaking solo home run off the scoreboard to give UNT a 2-1 advantage. Paired with a second inning single, Nobles recorded the first multi-hit game of her career.
Later in the sixth, the Mean Green loaded the bases with two outs before a wild pitch allowed Blayze McNemar to score the third run of the afternoon with her older sister, Riley McNemar, standing in the batter's box. Two pitches later, Riley McNemar drove a three-run home run over the left-center field wall for her 10th career home run at North Texas.
Lewinski sealed the game as she retired the side in the seventh, including a highlight-worthy spinning assist from freshman shortstop Eva Daniels for the second out of the inning.
The Mean Green will finish its series against Tulsa at noon Sunday with streaming coverage on ESPN+. Fans can purchase tickets HERE.
