DENTON, Texas – The UNT men's golf team is set to compete at the American Conference Championship this week in Sarasota, Fla. With a win, the Mean Green would punch their first ticket to an NCAA Regional since 2016.
North Texas enters play as the fifth-highest ranked team in the American after holding the 92nd spot in Scoreboard's latest rankings. Charlotte leads the conference at No. 22 in the country, while South Florida, Rice, Memphis and UAB join the Mean Green inside the top 100 and Florida Atlantic, UTSA, East Carolina, Wichita State and Temple round out the field. Playing at the Ritz-Carlton Members Club, a par-72, 7,417-yard layout, the 11-team field will play 18 holes each day from Monday to Wednesday.
Last season, UNT stormed back with a final-round 277 to take third place despite entering as the seventh-seeded team. That round marked the program's lowest 18-hole score ever at a conference tournament and was propelled by top-10 finishes from then-freshmen Blake Keen and Alex Huang. Charlotte captured the team title at 35-under after defeating South Florida in a playoff.
Huang and Keen once again headline the Mean Green lineup, this time being joined by Mitchell Maier, Kalle Svederman and Rayhan Latief. Rafael Estrada will also make the trip to Sarasota and can be inserted into the lineup following Monday's round.
The team leader in stroke average, Huang has finished top 20 in five different tournaments this season, including an 11th-place showing at the challenging Maridoe Collegiate last month. He was tied for eighth in last year's conference tournament, just two strokes behind Keen's fourth-place result. Maier has also been impressive throughout his debut season for the Mean Green, starting all 11 events and compiling a 73.13 stroke average.
As a team, North Texas has placed top four in four different tournaments this season, a substantial improvement from the 2024-25 campaign when it did so twice. Three of those instances have come this spring, including back-to-back runner-up placements in February.
UNT is scheduled to tee off Monday at 7:30 a.m. CT alongside Memphis and UAB on hole No. 1. Live results can be followed here while Wednesday's round will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
