UNT softball kicks off the 2022 season with a trip to Louisiana to take part in The Evangeline Bank and Trust Invitational and the 36th Annual Louisiana Classics. The Mean Green start the season with matchups against Tulsa and Texas Southern in Lake Charles on Friday. North Texas then faces Louisiana Lafayette and Texas Southern on Saturday in Lafayette. The opening weekend concludes with a matchup against McNeese State on Sunday back in Lake Charles.
The Mean Green will open the season in the state of Louisiana for the third consecutive season with a combined record of 5-2 over the last two opening-season tournaments.
Led by fourth-year head coach Rodney DeLong, North Texas looks to continue to build upon the growing successes of his tenure in Denton. Last season, DeLong led the Mean Green to the highest win total in program history and the top seed in the conference tournament with a 38-12 overall record and 18-2 record in conference.
History against Opponents
Friday's season-opening matchup against Tulsa will be the 15th time these two programs have faced off, with the last game taking place on March 2, 2018. The Mean Green came up short in that one, losing 4-3. North Texas holds a 5-9 record against the Golden Hurricanes.
UNT will play Texas Southern for the second game of the day on Friday. The Mean Green last played Texas Southern on February 22, 2020, when they came away with a 6-1 win in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Mean Green will look to improve their 4-0 record against TSU when they square off on both Friday and Saturday.
On Saturday, the first game of two will be played against host Louisiana Lafayette. UNT holds a 4-28 record against the former Sun Belt opponent Ragin' Cajuns. The Mean Green have won the previous two matchups in the series with a 2-1 victory in Lafayette on February 8, 2020 and a 5-1 victory on February 23, 2019 at a neutral location in Waco.
The weekend will conclude with a highly anticipated matchup with McNeese State. These two teams will square off for only the fourth time after last playing in 2020 in this same tournament. The Cowgirls won the first game in the 2020 McNeese State Tournament 7-0 on February 7, but the Mean Green split the weekend with a 3-0 victory on February 9.
The Cowgirls will welcome back former Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year and current North Texas pitching coach Jamie Allred. Allred still holds the McNeese State records for career wins, single season wins, and single season shutouts. She earned four letters from 2013-16.
