Softball Opens AAC Play with Sweep

DENTON, Texas – A pair of home runs from Molly Rainey and Mikayla Smith lifted UNT softball to a 7-4 comeback win over East Carolina to complete an American Athletic Conference sweep on Sunday at Lovelace Stadium.

"We had something to prove," Smith said. "Everyone [on the team] was a little amped up to come out to compete and that's what we did."

With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Smith connected on an 0-1 pitch for her first career grand slam to give the Mean Green (12-11, 3-0) a 7-4 lead. She finishes the series 4-for-6 with three runs scored, two extra-base hits and four RBI.

North Texas faced a pair of one-run deficits against ECU (21-5, 0-3) on Sunday and overcame the first with a three-run home run off the bat of Rainey in the fourth inning.

Starting pitcher Skylar Savage (ND) recorded her 200th career strikeout after she tallied three in the contest. She allowed three earned runs on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings.

McKenzie Wagoner (W, 7-3) collected her 30th collegiate career win in relief after she finished the final 2.1 innings. She held the Pirates to one earned run on four hits.

Cierra Simon continued to swing a hot bat as she tallied her second multi-hit game in the past week. She opened the game with a highlight reel assist from shortstop with a runner standing on third base to close out the first inning.

Kailey Gamble drew two walks and extended her team high 13-game reached bases streak. She is seven free passes shy of tying the all-time UNT record of 104 held by Lisa Johnson (2009-12).
