Softball Collects Midweek Win Over ACU

DENTON, Texas – UNT softball extended its four-game winning streak with a 7-1 victory over Abilene Christian on Tuesday at Lovelace Stadium.
"We took care of business," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "We needed a win coming off a good weekend and I really wanted to see [our team] play well. The energy was good, and [Mackenzie Childers] threw a really good game. It was really the start that she needed."
Childers (W, 4-3) registered her third complete game of the season as she led the Mean Green (13-11) with nine strikeouts over 7.0 innings of work. She allowed zero earned runs on four hits and one walk.
Childers held ACU (8-13) to one hit through 5.1 innings before the Wildcats tallied an unearned run in the sixth inning.
The Mean Green offense opened the first with four runs after the first three batters reached base to load the bases with zero outs. Kalei Christensen knocked in two runs with a single before Mikayla Smith lifted an RBI double to center field. Tatum Sparks also recorded an RBI on a ground out for an early lead.
Over the past four games, Smith leads UNT with six hits, five RBI, three runs and 11 total bases including one home run and two doubles. The senior picked up an American Athletic Conference Honor Roll selection on Monday.
Senior Morgan Medford made her UNT debut and recorded an RBI as a pinch hitter in the second inning. She remained in the game at second base and tallied her first defensive assist.
Cierra Simon posted her third two-hit performance in the past five games with a 2-for-2 night. She dropped a two-RBI single in the fifth inning before she stole her fifth base of the season.

North Texas travels to UTSA for a three-game American Athletic Conference series beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. The series will be streamed on ESPN+ live from Roadrunner Field.
