DENTON, Texas – UNT softball fell 11-1 in five innings to No. 11 Texas A&M at Lovelace Stadium on Tuesday night.
"Texas A&M is really good," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "That's why they are sitting second in the SEC."
North Texas (25-19) suffered its second run-rule loss of the season against the Aggies (34-9) and sixth overall of the year.
The Mean Green defense shined after the second inning, including Molly Rainey opening the third with a leaping catch over the right field wall in foul territory for the first out.
Later, Tatum Sparks started a pair of inning-ending double plays at third base in the fourth and fifth frames. Kailey Gamble moved into sole possession of first place for career double plays turned at 48 after she received the throw from second on both plays.
Skylar Savage entered the game in relief with the bases loaded and zero outs. She completed three innings of work and allowed nine runs, three earned, on nine hits and one walk. Starter Mackenzie Childers (L, 9-6) failed to record an out and was charged with two earned runs on zero hits and four walks.
Kayleigh Smith finished the game in the circle with two clean innings of work and allowed two hits. Smith has not allowed a run over her last four appearances with five innings pitched and two strikeouts.
