Mean Green mount four-run comeback to secure series, take finale behind Lewinski complete game
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the sixth time in program history, UNT softball opened conference play with a three-game sweep as it enjoyed a pair of wins over UAB in a Saturday doubleheader at Mary Bowers Field.
The Mean Green (13-13, 3-0) recorded a 6-5 comeback win over the Blazers (11-13, 0-3) in game two of the series before a 3-1 victory in the series finale. North Texas have opened conference play with a sweep in three of the past five seasons after doing so only three times in the first 18 years of the program.
"Our team showed their resilience and fight today," head coach Cody White said. "We went down early in the first game, but we strung some hits together and got the job done. Then I was proud to see how we carried that momentum into the second game to complete the sweep."
UAB took a four-run lead in the first game of the afternoon, including two unearned runs due to errors, before Riley McNemar flipped the momentum with a three-run home run in the fourth inning. She drove in Sofia Schow, who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the second inning, and Bradi Harman on the play.
Despite trailing 4-3, the momentum theft was evident when starting pitcher Anneca Anderson (W, 5-3) and the Mean Green defense stranded two runners on base in the home half of the fourth before she retired the side in order in the fifth.
Harman opened the sixth inning with her second double of the day before Lianna Hull reached on an error to set the table for a two-run single from Riley McNemar to take the 5-4 lead. Riley McNemar finished the game with a career high five RBI while Harman posted her first four-hit performance at the Division I level.
Ariah Mitchell would add a vital insurance run with a sacrifice fly as UAB dropped a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh before Britney Lewinski (S, 2) retired the side to close out the comeback win.
Saturday's win marked the first four-run comeback for UNT since April 5, 2025, after it recorded a program record 18 come-from-behind victories last season which included six with a deficit of four or more runs.
In game two, the Mean Green set the tone early as Schow registered the game's first run with an RBI double before Blayze McNemar drove her in with an RBI single for a 2-0 lead in the second. UAB answered in the bottom of the second with one unearned run which was erased by Madison Conley with a solo home run in the third.
Lewinski (W, 7-6) tossed her sixth complete game of the season and held the Blazers to one unearned run on six hits and two walks while she collected two strikeouts over seven innings pitched. She finished the weekend with a 2-0 record, one save, 1.17 ERA and three strikeouts over 12 innings pitched.
North Texas will return to Lovelace Stadium for a three-game American Conference series versus Tulsa beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. The series will be streamed on ESPN+ and fans can purchase tickets HERE.
