Taylor Platt tallies four-hit game, walk-off single to open American Conference home schedule
"What a gutsy win from this bunch," head coach Cody White said. "Our team had opportunities to feel bad for themselves and pack it in, but they didn't. They just kept fighting to put themselves in a position to win and got the job done."
North Texas (14-13, 4-0) notched its fourth consecutive walk-off win at home over the Golden Hurricane (8-16, 0-4) after it did so in every game of a three-game sweep in 2024. The American Conference win also marks only the third 4-0 start to league play in program history.
Platt recorded a career night as she finished with four hits, including her RBI walk-off single, two runs scored and two RBI. She is the first UNT player with a walk-off hit in the seventh inning or later since Riley McNemar hit a grand slam to cap a 6-5 victory over Texas Tech at Lovelace Stadium on Feb. 26, 2025.
Platt is the third Mean Green player with a four-hit game this season, joining Elizabeth Moffitt and Bradi Harman, which marks only the second time in program history in which there have been more than three four-hit games in a single season. In 2016, Mean Green hitters recorded four four-hit games.
Madison Conley and Ariah Mitchell each posted two-run home runs, in the first and second inning, which erased the three-run lead built by the Golden Hurricane in the top of the first. After Tulsa tied the game at 4-4 in the third, the Mean Green dropped four runs in the fourth inning including an RBI double from Platt and two-run single from Harman.
Tulsa retaliated with two-run innings in the fifth and sixth to square the game at 8-8. North Texas stranded multiple base runners in both the seventh and eighth innings as Britney Lewinski (W, 8-6) retired nine of the final 10 batters she faced, including three strikeouts, to set up the ninth.
After two quick outs in the bottom of the ninth, Sofia Schow jumped on the first pitch she saw for a single before Blayze McNemar followed suit to place runners on first and second. Mayer entered as a pinch runner at second before Platt laced the run-scoring hit into shallow center as Mayer dove headfirst into home for the game-winning run.
UNT is set for game two of the Tulsa series Saturday at 2 p.m. on ESPN+. Fans can purchase tickets HERE.
