COMMERCE, Texas – UNT softball swept a pair of run-rule wins with an 8-0 shutout in five innings against SIUE before it won 9-1 in five innings versus Southern to close the Lion Classic at the John Cain Family Softball Complex on Sunday.
"We executed selflessly today," head coach Cody White said. "There were a lot of great individual performances, but I'm most proud of the collective effort we gave to come away with two wins."
In total, the Mean Green (7-10) tallied 23 hits over the two five inning wins as it posted nine hits versus SIUE (6-9) and 14, one shy of its season-best mark, against Southern (6-7). Junior Elizabeth Moffitt registered multi-hit performances in both contests and has done so in six of the past seven games.
Britney Lewinski (W, 3-4) picked up the win over SIUE in game one as she recorded her first shutout of the season with six strikeouts while allowing two hits, two walks and one hit-by-pitch. Anneca Anderson (W, 4-2) followed suit with her fourth complete game of the season and matched her career high of eight strikeouts against Southern.
In game one, freshman Laila Nobles broke out with three RBI as she deposited a two-run single in the third and added a sacrifice fly in the third. Moffitt and Bradi Harman scored two runs apiece which tied personal-best marks for the season.
Madison Conley hit her second home run of the season against the Cougars in game one before a career best three-hit performance in game two versus the Lady Jaguars.
Against Southern, Ariah Mitchell led the Mean Green with three RBI as she hit a bases loaded double in the fifth inning before Conley plated her with her own double to the left field fence to push the game into run-rule territory.
North Texas travels to the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic in Lubbock, Texas, beginning Friday at noon against Abilene Christian before meeting No. 2 Texas Tech at 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
